Emblem

Alfred (Al) Denis Burmeister passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the age of 99, surrounded by family in his home in Evergreen Park.

Al was born on June 30, 1925, on the south side of Chicago, where he spent his childhood years. After graduating from St. Philip High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, served as a radioman and was stationed in various locations in the United States. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he worked part-time while attending DePaul University to earn a degree in commerce. Al ultimately became the Vice President/Treasurer of a Chicago-based insurance company. At age 54, he achieved a personal goal by returning to his study of accounting and obtaining his CPA. He retired in his early 70’s.

Al was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle to many nephews and nieces. He met his beloved wife Dorothy (Skubiszewski) in 1947, when he was training her for a job where he worked (and she ultimately took his place at the company). After their marriage in 1951, they became long-term residents of St. Bernadette Parish in Evergreen Park. Al used his financial expertise to help the church by serving on the parish Finance Council for many years under four consecutive pastors. Al and Dorothy celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary last August. Al is survived by Dorothy and their four children (Monica, Nancy, Thomas (Maureen), and David), their three grandchildren (Brian (Laurie), Colleen, and Leanne (Gary)), and their two great-grandchildren (Colin and Liam). Al was preceded in death by his two siblings, Mary Alice and Keith. Al was a kind and generous man, always quick to help family, friends, and neighbors. He loved music from an early age and won a band scholarship in high school playing the baritone horn. He also played the piano, trombone, and accordion. As a young man, Al was a part of bands playing at weddings and other local events. He was an avid bowler on teams with friends and family, as well as a church-sponsored team. He coached Little League baseball and was involved in many school and church events with his family, and he supported all his children in their educational pursuits. He will be deeply missed.
